The Future

When Jeremy Daniels woke up, he immediately knew something was wrong. His mouth was dry, his body stiff, and the air smelled... different. It wasn’t the faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee that typically wafted into his bedroom every morning, nor the comforting hum of his apartment's air conditioner. Instead, the room around him buzzed softly with an almost musical tone, and the air felt unnaturally sterile.

Jeremy sat up, rubbing his temples. His last memory was of a rainy evening in 2024, an uneventful Thursday night spent binge-watching his favorite show. Now, he was lying in a sleek, pod-like chamber that emitted a faint blue glow. The walls around him were made of smooth, reflective metal, and strange symbols flickered on screens nearby.

“Good morning, Jeremy Daniels,” said a calm, disembodied voice.

Jeremy flinched, looking around. “Who said that?”

“I am ALVA, your Automated Life and Vitality Assistant,” the voice continued. “It is currently the year 3024. You have been successfully revived from stasis.”

“Stasis?” Jeremy repeated, his voice cracking. He swung his legs out of the pod and stumbled to his feet, wobbling slightly. “What do you mean, revived? What’s going on here?”

“You were cryogenically preserved in the year 2024 as part of an experimental program. Due to technological limitations of your era, the process was irreversible until now. You have been reanimated after one thousand years, as per your preservation contract.”

Jeremy’s head spun. He vaguely remembered signing up for a cryogenics program during a college seminar. It was a novelty idea at the time—something he did for the heck of it after a convincing presentation. He never thought they’d actually do it.

“I’ve been asleep for a thousand years?” he asked, his voice trembling.

“Correct,” ALVA replied. “You are among the first successful revivals of the 21st-century Preservation Project. Congratulations!”

Jeremy wasn’t sure “congratulations” was the right sentiment. His entire world—everyone and everything he had ever known—was gone. Panic bubbled in his chest, but before he could spiral further, ALVA’s soothing tone interrupted his thoughts.

“Would you like a moment to acclimate, or shall I proceed with your orientation?”

“Orientation?” Jeremy asked.

“To help you adapt to the societal, technological, and environmental advancements of the 31st century,” ALVA explained.

Jeremy exhaled shakily. “Yeah, sure. Let’s get it over with.”

The room’s walls dissolved, revealing an expansive cityscape that took Jeremy’s breath away. Towers of shimmering glass and light stretched toward the sky, their shapes fluid and ever-shifting as though alive. Above, the sky was a kaleidoscope of colors, with glowing orbs zipping through the air like fireflies.

“Welcome to New Terra,” ALVA announced. “This is one of Earth’s primary megacities, home to over fifty million residents.”

Jeremy gawked at the futuristic metropolis. “What... are those?” he asked, pointing to the glowing orbs darting overhead.

“Personal transportation pods,” ALVA explained. “They are fully autonomous and powered by clean, self-sustaining energy.”

Jeremy’s knees felt weak as he took a cautious step forward. The ground beneath him wasn’t solid concrete but a transparent material that revealed an underground network of pulsing energy conduits. It was like standing on a living circuit board.

“Okay, ALVA,” Jeremy said, trying to steady his voice. “What else has changed?”

“Many aspects of life have evolved,” ALVA replied. “Human society is now governed by a global cooperative known as the Unity. War, poverty, and disease have been largely eradicated through advanced technology and a universal focus on sustainability and equity.”

Jeremy blinked. “No war? No disease? That’s... impressive.”

“Indeed,” ALVA agreed. “However, humanity has also faced significant challenges. Rising sea levels and climate shifts during the 22nd and 23rd centuries rendered much of the planet uninhabitable. New Terra and other megacities were designed as self-sufficient hubs to support the surviving population.”

Jeremy’s awe shifted to unease. “So, what about... people? Are they still, you know, human?”

“Humanity has embraced biological and technological enhancements,” ALVA said. “Most individuals possess integrated neural interfaces, granting them seamless access to the global knowledge network. Some have also adopted bio-augmentations to enhance physical and cognitive abilities.”

Jeremy’s stomach churned. “And what about me? Am I... normal?”

“You remain biologically unaltered,” ALVA assured him. “As a revivor, you are classified as a ‘Historical Human.’ Adjustments to your physiology would require your consent.”

Jeremy sighed in relief but couldn’t shake the feeling of being a relic in a world that had moved on without him.

Over the next few days, Jeremy’s orientation continued. ALVA guided him through the basics of life in 3024, from accessing public services via neural terminals to navigating the sprawling megacity. He learned about advancements in renewable energy, space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Yet, despite the wonders surrounding him, Jeremy couldn’t escape a sense of isolation.

Most of the people he encountered were polite but distant, their attention often focused on unseen data streams rather than the world around them. Conversations felt stilted, as if his lack of neural enhancements marked him as an outsider.

One evening, Jeremy found himself wandering a serene park nestled amidst the towering buildings. Here, nature and technology coexisted harmoniously—trees glowed softly with bioluminescent leaves, and streams of water flowed in gravity-defying patterns.

As he sat on a bench, lost in thought, a figure approached him.

“Mind if I join you?” she asked, her voice warm and melodic.

Jeremy looked up to see a woman with striking silver hair and luminescent eyes. Unlike most people he’d seen, she carried a tangible sense of curiosity and empathy.

“Sure,” Jeremy said, gesturing to the empty spot beside him.

“I’m Kaela,” she introduced herself. “You must be the revivor everyone’s been talking about.”

Jeremy chuckled dryly. “Guess I’m a bit of a novelty.”

Kaela smiled. “More like a bridge to the past. People here are curious about what life was like in your time.”

Jeremy shrugged. “Pretty mundane compared to this place. No floating cars or glowing trees back in 2024.”

Kaela laughed. “True, but your era laid the groundwork for everything we have now. Without the breakthroughs and mistakes of the past, none of this would exist.”

Jeremy studied her, intrigued. “You seem different from most people I’ve met here.”

Kaela’s expression softened. “That’s because I’m an Archivist. My job is to preserve and study human history. Meeting someone like you is a rare opportunity.”

Jeremy’s heart lifted for the first time since his awakening. “Maybe you can help me feel less like a fossil,” he joked.

Kaela grinned. “I’d be happy to.”

Over the following weeks, Jeremy and Kaela spent hours together, exploring New Terra and delving into its history. She introduced him to virtual recreations of Earth’s past, allowing him to revisit familiar sights and sounds. In turn, Jeremy shared stories of his life, painting a vivid picture of a world long gone.

With Kaela’s guidance, Jeremy began to see his place in this new world not as an outsider, but as a link between eras. He even started to consider embracing some of the enhancements available to him, not to replace who he was, but to better understand the world around him.

One day, as they stood atop a towering spire overlooking the city, Jeremy turned to Kaela.

“Do you ever think about the future?” he asked.

Kaela smiled. “All the time. But I’ve learned that the past holds just as much value. It reminds us of where we came from and helps us decide where we’re going.”

Jeremy nodded, a sense of purpose stirring within him. He might have woken up a thousand years out of place, but maybe, just maybe, he had something to offer this future. And perhaps, it had something to offer him in return.

For the first time since his awakening, Jeremy felt a spark of hope.

He was ready to begin his new life.
